Love as it should be
I often wonder about the many relationships we create and the structure in which build its strength to last through eternity. Here’s one of my favorites…
Oceans apart .....
"A Love story made in Rome "
This love story began in a village near Rome Italy. It started with two school age children no older than the age of ten. Life was a challenge for both laura and Dorino for they shared one thing in common, the effects of the world war around 1940. Although they were as ordinary as the other children of that time era. They were both affected by a loss of their fathers. Laura's father was a solider killed on his way home when lighting a fire to stay warm and unexpectedly A bomb went off and was killed and tragically leaving a wife and five children to survive. Dorino's father was a prisoner of war and spent about ten years of his life in Africa. Meeting his father as a ten year old, was as if he had lived his life without a father.
These two children were soon to be separated for Dorino and his family were re rooting to another country, England is where they were heading for the next few years.
There childhood friendship appeared to come to a closure and although a few years had passed and not expecting to continue this friendship they were happy to be reacquainted when Dorino and his family returned to Rome for a visit. Laura had grown up into a lovely teenager and Dorino had become more interesting to her for now he was different than the other boys in italy. Not only did he speak a new language from the rest, but the impression that he left on Laura was in his style of dressing. With an English flair in the nickers and strange socks Laura defiantly
Found Dorino more interesting than anyone else she was ever acquainted with. But regardless of the mutual interest they had found in each other fate once again would interfere and take him to the new world.
This time even further the distance for on a ship to America is where his family was Bound.
Dorino's life had many changes that he was facing. With all the adjustments he had to make there were many challenges to overcome.
He had to find his place in this world that was so different from where he had descended from. His childhood memories were filled with the warmth of his mother and his Aunts who had protected him from all the tribulation of that time. Without the presence of his father he relied only on
The love of his mother during what might be considered a time of trauma, but brought a stronger and mutual connection shared between a Mother and child.
Laura was waiting to hear from him knowing that committing to him was a risk worth taking for he was all she could imagine herself with. A boy that she grew up with and shared the good memories of childhood in a era that was also filled with fear and devastation...the lack of her fathers presence was a loss that she suffered, and yet, it is where she gained her strength in living her life.
The letters Dorino and laura wrote to each other gave them a sense of security that they both needed.
And though oceans apart, the words they wrote to each other bound them together. Unsure how they could ever become one in these two worlds . Faith in God kept their belief , that oneday these letters would give them the answer to remove this distance between them and begin a life together, that as of now was only in a dream.
Time passed and Dorino and Laura became well known within their family community as a couple. Amazed is what most everyone felt, two children that have stayed connected as pen pals. The distance between them did not change their feelings for each other . Until one day he made his journey back to Rome to reunite with his bride. Understanding that a good six years passed by. They stayed connected only thorough the letters. There were no phone connections, but only the ink on each page of every anxiously awaited letter sent to each other. Romance was the way to describe what they built between themselves. In Italy everyone knew that Laura was faithfully awaiting her groom to arrive and of course the bittersweet feeling of what this would mean, her time fell short in her country that she knew so well. Her family that she would soon have to say goodbye to. Her mother and siblings giving their consent to a young 19 year old woman who made her choice to move forth in this unknown journey ahead to a new foreign world. Not knowing if she would ever return, for oceans apart, she would be uncertain if it were ever possible. For to travel in those days were not easy and very expensive. Relying on faith that the future would give them the good fortune to one day return to their homeland, where it all began for these two People . Two people that I call Mom and Dad, who taught me so much about strength, true love and determination. Laura and Dorino, my parents, who fell in love as children and made a legacy for their family and showed
the world that dreams can happen when the heart guides you...
